In Mayan culture, Duality or Ka’a represents the mysterious and unknown forces of the universe, partnership, and balance. My modern interpretation departs from the traditional notion that duality is only represented by opposites; In my work duality is symbolized by two equal forces.

Statement: My work embodies many years of self-exploration and finding my ancestral roots thru painting and drawing. This is a very personal and intimate process, as well as an exploratory journey that has allowed myself to grow and develop as an artist. Art is such a powerful tool that can influence, educate, transform and open doors for new generations to come. We can learn from our past to create a better future.

Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve been intrigued by science and technology and how the world works. At a very young age, I began drawing from old anatomy books from my parents’ library. This curiosity took me to a level where I began to take my toys apart and repurpose them to create battery operated inventions. In my mind they would be one day used in space. The bionic man TV show series and Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein fed my imagination. I grew up admiring the Jacques Cousteau scientific sea exploration documentaries. The quest for answers has never left me, and to this day my life and my artwork whether a painting, a drawing, a poem, or a sculpture reflect the questions of who we are and who we want to become.
